Israeli and U.S. Warships Conduct Milestone Maritime Patrol

Ships from the Israeli Navy and U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) conducted a combined maritime security patrol in the Red Sea, Aug. 30-31. Four Israeli and U.S. Navy ships sailed together in the Gulf of Aqaba as the U.S. Department of Defense shifted Israel from U.S. European Command to U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility.

QATAR, AFCENT validate tactics during Exercise Sky Shield III

Airmen from U.S. Air Forces Central and the Qatar Emiri Air Force participated in Exercise Sky Shield III at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, Aug. 1-4, 2021. Sky Shield III is a bilateral defensive counter-air combat patrol and combat search and rescue exercise designed to validate AFCENT and QEAF’s combined capability to defend regional airspace.

The 46th Expeditionary Attack Squadron serves a multi-faceted operation that is responsible for reconnaissance, intelligence and surveillance throughout the area of responsibility. Here they have a launch and recovery element utilizing the MQ-9 Reaper to complete their mission to meet daily air tasking orders. The MQ-9s provide a persistent attack and reconnaissance capability to the theater.

Pakistan, German, U.S. Naval Forces Conduct Passing Exercise in Arabian Sea

The Pakistan Navy frigate PNS Alamgir (F 260) and German Navy frigate FGS Bayern (F 217) participated in a passing exercise (PASSEX) with guided-missile cruiser USS Shiloh (CG 67) in the Arabian Sea, Sept. 6. The exercise included advanced maneuvers and communication drills flexing the crews’ abilities to operate together in a dynamic environment, and test and refine combined command and control processes.

NAVCENT Begins IMX 22 Main Planning Conference

U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) opened the main planning conference for International Maritime Exercise (IMX) 22 in Manama, Bahrain, Aug. 16. During the conference, virtual participants and 100 in-person attendees from 21 nations are meeting to collaborate and plan exercise details. Planners will develop training scenarios, determine what assets will be needed and identify additional considerations for the exercise’s final planning conference later this year.

First Visit by U.S. Warship to Egypt’s Berenice Naval Base

Guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61) visited Egypt’s Berenice Naval Base, Aug. 12, marking the first time a U.S. warship has pulled into the Red Sea base, which officially opened in January 2020. During the visit the ship hosted Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT), U.S. 5th Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces (CMF); Vice Adm. Ahmed Khaled Hassan Saeed, commander of the Egyptian Naval Force; U.S. Ambassador to Egypt, Jonathan R. Cohen; and Commodore Waleed Aly Atiaa, commanding officer of Berenice Naval Base.
