11th MEU, USS Portland transit Strait of Hormuz
STRAIT OF HORMUZ (Oct. 4, 2021) Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Gerrit Olsen, a machine gunner assigned to Alpha Company, Battalion Landing Team 1/1, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), scans for nearby vessels while transiting the Strait of Hormuz aboard the amphibious transport dock USS Portland (LPD 27), Oct. 4. Portland and the 11th MEU are deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and Pacific through the Western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
