FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TAMPA, Fla. – U.S. Central Command will activate U.S. Space Forces - Central at MacDill Air Force Base on Dec. 2, 2022.
SPACECENT will be the newest service component under CENTCOM with their permanent headquarters at MacDill Air Force Base. The new organization will directly report to the CENTCOM commander and is responsible for the execution of space operations within the CENTCOM AOR.
SPACECENT will be staffed by 28 service members and commanded by Col. Christopher Putman. It will play a significant role in supporting CENTCOM’s growing need for space-based capabilities such as satellite navigation, communications and missile warnings.
“Just as the evolution of space as a warfighting domain necessitated the establishment of a separate service, SPACECENT provides CENTCOM a subordinate command focused solely and continuously on space integration across the command - with all domains and all components,” said Putman.
Activating the U.S. Space Force component to CENTCOM provides CENTCOM a cadre of space experts who work with allies and partners to integrate space activities into shared operations. SPACECENT's presence in the AOR enhances CENTCOM’s ability to promote security and regional stability, while also advancing U.S. partnerships in the region throughout the space domain.
