Pentagon Spokesman: Iraqi Troops Force Defensive Choices for ISIL

WASHINGTON — Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said Iraqi security forces continue to apply pressure on multiple fronts in the operation to retake the country’s second-largest city of Mosul from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant terrorists.

Isolation, Liberation of Raqqa Key in Defeating ISIL, Pentagon Spokesman Says

WASHINGTON — Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said the isolation and liberation of the Syrian city of Raqqa from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant are key in efforts to ultimately defeat the terrorists.

'Steady Progress' As Some Iraqi Forces Reach Mosul, OIR Official Says

WASHINGTON — A spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve said Iraqi forces and Kurdish Peshmerga fighters are gaining ground in the battle for Mosul, with some forces reaching the northern Iraqi city.

Iraqi, Kurdish Forces Approaching Outskirts of Mosul

WASHINGTON — Pentagon Press Operations director Navy Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters Iraqi and Kurdish forces are about 5 miles from Mosul’s outskirts and are clearing towns and villages to the north, east and south of Iraq’s second-largest city.

OIR Commander Cites Momentum in Mosul Push; Raqqa Isolation to Begin 'Soon'

WASHINGTON — Army Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend, commander of Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve, told Pentagon reporters that Iraqi forces continue to make steady progress in the effort to retake Mosul from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

Carter Meets With Iraqi Prime Minister, Addresses Troops in Baghdad

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Ash Carter met with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in Baghdad and spoke with troops there about the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and the ongoing military campaign to retake the city of Mosul.

Iraqi Troops Advance Toward Mosul as ISIL Tries to Hide Movements

WASHINGTON — Iraqi and Kurdish peshmerga security forces are working together as they advance along several axes to liberate Mosul, Iraq, from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant control, Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, director of Pentagon press operations said.

Dunford Hosts Chiefs of Defense to Discuss Counter-Extremism Strategy

JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. — The defense chiefs from 43 nations and the commanders of the U.S. combatant commands joined Marine Corps Gen. Joe Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at Joint Base Andrews, Md., for a discussion on the global strategy to defeat violent extremism.

Iraqi Forces Begin Battle for Mosul

WASHINGTON — Iraqi Forces have begun their counter-attack to liberate Mosul from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, according to a statement released by Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve officials.

Liberating Mosul Will Be Iraq’s Biggest Fight, OIR Spokesman Says

WASHINGTON — The size of Iraq’s second-largest city will make the liberation of Mosul from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s two-year grip the largest mission Iraqi security forces have undertaken against the enemy, the spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve said.
