Statement from U.S. Central Command on the Manbij Roadmap

In accordance with the Manbij Roadmap and Manbij Security Principles, coordinated independent patrol activities by Turkish and Coalition forces began June 18, along the demarcation line north of Manbij. Both parties are continuing to plan for combined patrols, with a commitment to increase cooperation based on conditions on the ground. The coordinated patrols are part of the commitment to long-term security and stability in Manbij, and the U.S. commitment to NATO Ally Turkey. Maintaining security and stability in Manbij is also important to sustaining momentum for ongoing D-ISIS operations in eastern Syria.

“U.S. Central Command welcomes the announcement by the Taliban of a three day Eid ceasefire. We hope that their positive response to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s initial ceasefire announcement will lead to the reduction of violence and future dialogue towards a lasting Afghan-owned peace that is strongly desired by the people of Afghanistan. We applaud President Ghani and the government of Afghanistan’s bold leadership in support of reconciliation and peace.”

Statement from Gen. Joseph Votel, commander, U.S. Central Command on Afghanistan ceasefire

U.S. Central Command firmly supports President Ghani's decision to unilaterally declare a cease-fire in response to the people of Afghanistan's desire for a peaceful conclusion to the holy month of Ramadan. Both the people and their religious leaders have spoken out in support of peace, and their government has answered the call. All journeys begin with a single step, and we hope the Taliban joins the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in taking this first step towards what could be a more peaceful, prosperous and secure Afghanistan. U.S. Forces in Afghanistan under Gen. John Nicholson will fully adhere to the tenants of the ceasefire as outlined by President Ghani.
