READOUT: U.S. CENTCOM Commander meets with Omani leadership to discuss security cooperation on June 19th, 2022

USCENTCOM

General Michael “Erik” Kurilla met with:

  • His Highness Sayyid Shihab bin Tarik Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Defense Affairs;

  • General Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Numani, Minister of the Royal Office;

  • Dr. Mohammed bin Nasser Ali Al-Za’abi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense;

  • Vice Admiral Abdullah Khamis Al Ra’eesi, Chief of Staff of the Sultan’s Armed Forces; and

  • Other senior Omani leaders.

The leaders met to establish relationships and to discuss critical security issues, to include the UN-led Yemen truce. On behalf of the United States, General Kurilla thanked the Omani leadership for serving a central role in this effort: hosting and facilitating a dialogue that led to this truce.
“This truce is the best opportunity for peace in Yemen in years,” Kurilla said in a statement to the Oman News Agency after the engagements. “Thanks to Oman and other Gulf and Middle Eastern states, the truce is holding.”
Kurilla stressed the need for continued engagement between Oman and the United States to extend the truce to a more lasting peace.
The leaders also discussed a series of key opportunities around which Oman and the United States may strengthen security cooperation, including training and partnered exercises.
“These areas will allow us to strengthen our relations in the coming months and years while bolstering regional security” Kurilla said. “And, after today’s engagements, I see only the greatest opportunity."
