FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TAMPA, Fla. – U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) completed the orderly departure of U.S. forces from al-Tanf Garrison in Syria on Feb. 11 as part of a deliberate and conditions-based transition by Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR).
Established by CENTCOM in 2014, CJTF-OIR has advised, assisted, and enabled partner forces in the fight against ISIS. In April 2025, the Department of War announced the U.S. military would begin consolidating its locations in Syria after the territorial defeat of ISIS in 2019.
“U.S. forces remain poised to respond to any ISIS threats that arise in the region as we support partner-led efforts to prevent the terrorist network’s resurgence,” said Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander. “Maintaining pressure on ISIS is essential to protecting the U.S. homeland and strengthening regional security.”
Over the past two months, U.S. forces have struck more than 100 targets with over 350 precision munitions while capturing or killing more than 50 ISIS terrorists.
