FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SOUTHWEST ASIA - The Coalition congratulates the Government of Iraq and the Iraqi Security Forces on their swift and decisive victory against ISIS in Hawijah Oct. 5.

The battle was hard fought and operations to liberate the city took 14 days, with many sources reporting more than 1,000 terrorists surrendered.

"Our Iraqi partners fought bravely and professionally against a brutal and determined enemy, safeguarding innocent civilians throughout the entire campaign. Thanks to their efforts, Hawijah will return to local governance and security," said Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk II, Commanding General of the Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve.

"Today's victory demonstrates we are stronger together, and this Coalition remains committed to supporting our partners in the tough fight ahead as we continue our mission to defeat ISIS," said Funk.

The ISF continues to prove they are a battle-hardened, professional force dedicated to ridding their country of an evil enemy. While the liberation of Hawijah is a significant milestone, an ISIS presence remains in Iraq, and the Coalition will continue to stand side-by-side with the ISF in their collective mission to defeat ISIS.

The ISF are concurrently conducting operations in Western Anbar province and have already secured the towns of Anah, Rayhanah, and Akashat.

The liberation of Mosul, Tal Afar and Hawijah demonstrate continued progress in the campaign to defeat ISIS. The Coalition will continue to support the Government of Iraq as we recognize together the importance of a unified Iraq to the long-term security and prosperity of the Iraqi people.

The government of Iraq and the ISF, with the support of the Global Coalition, have liberated more than four million Iraqis and reclaimed over 41,500km² of land once held by ISIS.
