BALAD, Iraq (Apr. 14, 2008) - Two al-Qeada in Iraq terrorists attacked an Abna al-Iraq, or Sons of Iraq, checkpoint near Balad April 14. Acting in self-defense, the Sons of Iraq repelled the small arms fire and rocket propelled grenade attack, engaging and killing the two terrorists.
During the engagement, six local civilians, including several children, and one Iraqi Army officer were wounded. The wounded were initially taken to a local hospital. They were later transported to a Coalition force hospital for additional treatment.
"It is heartbreaking that innocent people here suffer from the brutal attacks of AQI," said Maj. Johnpaul Arnold, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division spokesman. "These Sons of Iraq acted bravely, defending the people’s safety in a populated area while under heavy fire from terrorists. They did very well."
