KABUL, Afghanistan (April 17, 2010) - The NATO Senior Civilian Representative for Afghanistan, Ambassador Mark Sedwill, congratulated the Government and Parliament of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan today for their agreement on managing the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Reacting to today’s press conference in which it was announced by the spokesman for the Presidential Palace, Waheed Omar, that the parliamentary elections will be implemented in September by the Independent Election Commission (IEC), Amb Sedwill stated that:
“I welcome this announcement and the collective leadership demonstrated by the Government and Parliament of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, with the support of the international community led by the United Nations. Credible and inclusive parliamentary elections will help to resolve the political tensions which fuel the insurgency and to entrench the development of Afghan democracy. A stable Afghanistan means a safer world.”
