Defeating Daesh Highlights of the Week July 29, 2020

Our partners in Iraq and Syria are leading the way to find and eliminate Daesh fighters and their finance, logistics, and media networks.

“Stronger border security will disrupt ISIS smuggling networks,” said Col. Myles B. Caggins III, Coalition military spokesman.

During the week of July 22 - 28, 2020, the following actions happened in Iraq:

July 22: Based on intelligence, a force from the 3rd Regiment, 8th Infantry Brigade, 7th Division, alongside Military Intelligence Detachments, located and seized a cache of ammunition and Daesh documents during a search operation in Rawa district, Anbar province.


July 22: Field Detachments from Baghdad Intelligence and Security Directorate, in coordination with the 2nd Division Iraqi Federal Police, located a cache of ammunition containing a number of mortar rounds, west of Baghdad. The seized cache was subsequently destroyed by the Field Engineering Detachment. 


 

July 23: Based on intelligence, troops from the 10th Intelligence, Reconnaissance and Surveillance Regiment located a hideout containing a number of explosive devices in al-Jilood area, al-​​Karmah, Anbar province. The captured explosive devices were subsequently destroyed by the Field Engineering Detachment.

July 24: The 15th Infantry Division carried out a search and clearance operation to capture wanted criminals, clear explosive remnants of war and improve stability and security in Faqiruk mountain range, Zummar district, Ninawa province. A grenade, ammunition and two explosive devices were located and subsequently destroyed by the Field Engineering Detachment.


July 24: The 16th Infantry Division commenced an operation to clear war remnants in al-Shahwani neighborhood in old Mosul area, Ninawa province. The operation aimed to mitigate the risks to the health and livelihoods of affected communities and to reduce the threats to peace and security. A number of explosive devices, explosive belts, hand grenades, rockets, launchers, damaged artillery and mortar rounds, detonators, wireless radios, rifles and decomposing corpses were found. The seized materials were removed from the site and subsequently destroyed by the Field Engineering Detachment. Additionally, 13 villages were searched and security check was performed on all residents.  A tunnel containing ammunition was located in al-Sayed Hamad village and was subsequently destroyed by the Field Engineering Detachment.

July 24: As part of efforts to counter terrorism, a combined force from the 2nd and 3rd Regiments, 4th Infantry Brigade, 1st Division alongside Military Intelligence Detachments, located a cache of weapons and ammunition south the expressway in al-Rutba, Anbar province.

July 24: Based on intelligence, a joint force from the 3rd Regiment, Commando Brigade, and the Intelligence, Reconnaissance and Surveillance Platoon, al-Jazeera Operations Command, captured a terrorist wanted by the Iraqi Judiciary in an ambush in al-Qaim, Anbar province.  Separately another joint force from the 3rd Regiment, Commando Brigade with the Intelligence, Reconnaissance and Surveillance Regiment, 8th Division, al-Jazeera Operations Command and in coordination with Haditha Tribal Crowd located a number of explosives and ammunition in al-Qaim and Haditha in Anbar. The seized materials were removed from the site according to Explosives Safety Standards.


July 24: Based on intelligence, Field Detachments from Kirkuk Intelligence and Security Directorate located a cache of ammunition belonging to Daesh in al-Riyadh sub-district, Hawija district, Kirkuk province.


July 24: Intelligence Detachments from Iraqi Ministry of Interior (MoI) captured three terrorists wanted by the Iraqi Judiciary in separate areas of Kirkuk provinces. In a concurrent operation, a cache of ammunition, remnants from Daesh, was seized on al-Mukaishefa Island.

July 25: In an intelligence-led operation, Detachments from Baghdad Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism Directorate, Iraqi Ministry of Interior (MoI), captured three Daesh terrorists wanted by the Iraqi Judiciary in three simultaneous raids in al-Taji, al-Dora and al-Zaydan areas, Baghdad province. The captured terrorists had worked with the so-called “Wilayat the South” and participated in several terrorist attacks against Iraqi Security Forces. The captured terrorists were handed over to the appropriate authorities.

July 26: Based on intelligence, a joint force from the 3rd Regiment, Commando Brigade and the Intelligence, Reconnaissance and Surveillance Platoon, al-Jazeera Operations Command, ambushed a Daesh terrorist wanted by the Iraqi Judiciary at a check point in Haditha, Anbar province. The captured terrorist had worked with the so-called “Wilayat Anbar” during Daesh occupation of the city. The captured terrorist was handed over to the appropriate authority.

July 26: Based on intelligence, the 15th Infantry Division carried out a search operation to capture wanted criminals, clear explosive remnants of war and improve stability and security in north Sinjar district, Ninawa province.  A number of ammunition and mortar rounds were located and subsequently destroyed.

July 26: Based on intelligence, a joint force from the 2nd Regiment, 32nd Infantry Brigade and the Intelligence, Reconnaissance and Surveillance Regiment, 8th Division, located a terrorist hideout containing explosive devices and explosives in the T1 area, ​​al-Qaim, Anbar province.

July 26 - 27: Salah Ad-Din Operations Command launched a large scale search and clearance operation along the banks of al-Eziam River east of Salah Ad-Din province towards the border with Samarra Operations Command, to enforce security and stability in these areas. Forces from the 1st Regiment, Commando Brigade, SWAT Regiment, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and Communication Unit from Salah Ad-Din Police Directorate and Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), with the support of Iraqi Army Aviation, participated in the operation. July 27: Intelligence Detachments from Iraqi Ministry of Interior captured four terrorists wanted by the Iraqi Judiciary in separate areas of Kirkuk province. The captured terrorists were handed over to the appropriate authorities. Additionally, a cache of ammunition containing 40 rockets and two artillery system, remnants from Daesh, was seized in the village of Shallalat, Kirkuk province. The seized cache was removed from the site according to Explosives Safety Standards.

July 27: Based on tip-off from Mosul residents, a joint force from Karama Police Directorate, Ninawa Police Command and Ninawa Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism Directorate, Iraqi Ministry of Interior, captured four Daesh terrorists in different areas across Mosul city. One of the captured terrorist had worked with the so-called “al-Hisba” and the rest had worked as Daesh fighters with the so-called “Army of Soldiers, General Camps and Nahawand Combat Team” during Daesh occupation of the city. https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=151818703186661&id=101662361535629

July 27: Based on intelligence, the 73rd Infantry Brigade, 15th Division, conducted a search and clearance operation to capture wanted criminals and clear war remnants in al-Ayyadhiya mountain range, Tal Afar district, Ninawa province.  An anti-tank rocket, a grenade, anti-drone round, a mortar round and a homemade explosive device were located. In a concurrent operation, a force from the 1st Regiment, 1st Infantry Brigade, 1st Division alongside Military Intelligence Detachments located a cache of ammunition and explosive devices in al-Dhila area, south al-Rutba district, Anbar province.

 
July 27: Based on intelligence, a joint force from the 2nd Regiment, 8th Infantry Brigade and Military Intelligence Detachments, 7th Division, in coordination with the Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) and Anah Provincial Police, located a cache containing explosive devices, explosives and Daesh publications in Wadi al-Qasr, Anah district, Anbar province. In a concurrent operation, a force from the 1st Regiment, 32nd Infantry Brigade, 8th Division located a cache of explosive devices in al-Mashare’ area in al-Qaim, Anbar province. All the seized materials were removed from the site by the Field Engineering Detachment according to Explosive Safety Standards.


July 27: Based on intelligence, a force from the 1st Regiment, 39th Infantry Brigade, 10th Division alongside Military Intelligence Detachments captured two terrorists wanted by the Iraqi Judiciary in Albu Sha’ban area, Ramadi, Anbar province.

July 28: In a concurrent operation a joint force from the Intelligence Unit, Jazeera Operations Command and the Reconnaissance Regiment, 8th Division located a cache of ammunition in al-Ubaidi area, al-Qaim District, Anbar province.

July 28: Based on intelligence, a force from the 32nd Brigade, 8th Division alongside Military Intelligence Detachments located a tunnel that was used as a hospital to treat Daesh wounded terrorists before the liberation

July 28: Based on intelligence, a force from the 4th Regiment, 22nd Brigade, 6th Division, alongside Military Intelligence Detachments located a number of explosive devices in al-Nabai’i desert, north of Baghdad.

 
July 28: Based on intelligence, a force from the 1st Regiment, 39th Infantry Brigade, 10th Division, alongside Military Intelligence Detachments located a cache of rockets in ​​Albu Faraj area, Ramadi, Anbar province. The seized cache was removed from the site by the Field Engineering Detachment. 


Removing Daesh fighters, weapons and explosive material remains a top priority as Daesh continues to plot attacks against innocent civilians and our partners throughout Iraq and northeast Syria.
