Base Camp Assessment in Besmayah

BESMAYAH, IRAQ –Medical personnel belonging to Task Force MED-528 and the Spanish Army conducted a base camp assessment June 3-7, 2019, with the aim of inspecting different facilities in TF Besmayah. During the visit, they inspected several buildings located on the base such as the water treatment plant, dining facilities, the canteen, the pesticide storage area and the hazardous waste area in order to check their condition and capacities. Their findings will be used to reduce health risks of the soldiers deployed in support of Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR).

 

On June 8, U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Albertson, CJTF-OIR command sergent major, visited TF Besmayah and the Besmayah Range Complex. The visit aimed to provide him a better understanding of TF Besmayah trainers’ activities. He spoke with Spanish and Portuguese trainers working at the Besmayah Range Complex and discussed training with the TF Besmayah commander and other senior noncommissioned officers. After that, he attended a shooting exercise where the trainers could exchange weapons with each other, offering a better knowledge of allied weapons systems.

 

Following the end of Ramadan, the Iraqi Army 2nd Composite Brigade and the Iraqi 16th Federal Police (FEDPOL) Brigade continued their training at the Besmayah Range Complex. Iraqi troops worked to improve their current skills and will be trained in new techniques and procedures under Task Force Besmayah supervision. The 16th FEDPOL Brigade is close to the final exercise in which they will apply all the knowledge and skills they have learned during in recent months such us body searching, urban combat, shooting techniques and offensive movements.

 

On June 9, the 9th Portuguese contingent started their planned events regarding celebration of “Portugal Day.” The Day of Portugal is a national holiday celebrated by the Portuguese nation every year on June 10th and celebrates the life of Luis Vaz de Camões, Portugal’s national poet.
