Support to the Global War on Terror

Internationally, the world has been going through an unprecedented situation, being deeply marked by the irrational acts of forces pursuing terrorism as means of dividing the international community and weakening world stability.

The global character of the fight against terrorism has become the necessary component, however unexpected and the least wanted, of globalization, already turning itself into a commandment of fight and of attitude for all democracies to which the Romanian state has unwaveringly associated itself.

In Iraq the Romanian Armed Forces participate since July 2003 in stabilization and reconstruction "IRAQI FREEDOM" operation. Now, about 500 troops are in mission and Romania is eighth among the countries contributing to the Coalition forces.

In the early stages of the contribution, Romania deployed, among other troops, an Engineering Detachment, with the main mission of roads construction and repair. They were also responsible with arrangement of platforms for helicopters and for parking vehicles; the construction and maintenance of bridges; the construction of engineering elements for protection of forces; works of construction for quarters for the personnel and the engineering missions for the use of the civil population.

Also, for a couple of years, a Military Police Company of 100 soldiers activated in An Nasiriyah, under the operational control of the Italian Brigade. The Company fulfilled search and reconnaissance missions, escort of military and civilian convoys, VIP protection, traffic control and monitoring.

Romania has also dispatched an Infantry Battalion, originally located in An Nasiryiah (currently at Tallil). They are fulfilling humanitarian support missions, escort of convoys of materials, VIP protection, permanent missions of base security, patrol and close reconnaissance in their area of responsibility.

Romania is also engaged in Afghanistan, since January 2002, when the Romanian Armed Forces deployed the first troops to work within the ISAF.

Once NATO took the ISAF mission, within the plan of enlarging the mission outside the capital, they also took a part of the projects of re-construction of provinces. In these projects Romania participates with one liaison officer, a mobile team of observation and a medical team. These soldiers grant expertise for stimulating the process of re-construction and take part in increasing the influence of the Afghani central authorities outside the capital.

Among other forces, Romania has deployed in Afghanistan an Infantry Battalion currently located at Qalat . The Battalion fulfills the missions of surveillance of sensitive points, participates in searching possible locations for Talibans, in supporting the humanitarian activities, escorting the material convoys, securing the coalition forces deployment.

Romania is participating since July 2003 in training the Afghani National Armed Forces (ANA Training) with a Detachment deployed in Kabul in programs of endowment and training, management of donations, recruiting and training of forces, inspection and maintenance of equipment and armament. The Romanian soldiers from the Romanian-American team in charge of direct liaison with the ministers of the Islamic Transition Government of Afghanistan granted technical assistance and counseled some ministers for performing the economical-financial profile on state enterprises from the Kabul Industrial Park . At the same time they also planned and delivered humanitarian relief granted by the Romanian Government to the Islamic Transition Government of Afghanistan.
