Support to the Global War on Terror (Operation Enduring Freedom)The Russian liaison team to HQ USCENTCOM was established on 29 November 2001. Currently it consists of two officers - a Senior National Representative and a Liaison Officer. After the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1378 was issued on 18 October 2001, Russia established level II Hospital in Kabul on 29 November 01 that treated more than 5,800 citizens prior to being turned over to local authorities on 25 January 02. In September 01, RUS deployed search and rescue (SAR) group consisting of 3 helicopters to Dushanbe, Tajikistan, and offered these units to support US-led combat operations. USCINCSOC directed a liaison officer to Moscow, and subsequently to Dushanbe to coordinate any SAR activities with this force. The helicopters redeployed to Russia on 7 February 02. Humanitarian AssistanceDonation of a wide variety of humanitarian assistance supplies such as food, tents, blankets, medicine, etc. for refugees. Starting October 01, Russia delivered HA supplies consisting of 420,296 tons of food supplies, 2,198 tons of medicines, 15,298 beds, 11,000 blankets, 1,200 heaters, and 780 tents through emergency management organization, EMERCOM. In March 02, EMERCOM (Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations) deployed its mobile hospital to Nakhreen and began medical assistance to the victims of the earthquake in Afghanistan. EMERCOM has delivered over 100 metric tons of HA supplies to include: provisions, medicines and means for purifying water. In April 02, Russia made a property Afghan government over 42 special vehicles, including 37 tracked, two fuel, two maintenance vehicles and two 4-wheel drive vehicles. Established a continuous humanitarian ground route between Tajikistan and Central Afghanistan. On 21 January 02, Russia placed a pontoon bridge into service across Nizhny Pianj river, consisting of four pontoon sections and two motor launches. Following the avalanche at Salang Tunnel, a major route connecting Mazar-E-Sharif and Kabul, in December 01 Russia specialists worked to restore operations of the 1,150 meters tunnel. January 02, Salang tunnel officially open to regular traffic.
