After the collapse of the USSR, on the 31 August 1991, Kyrgyzstan, officially the Kyrgyz Republic, became an independent, sovereign state and a full member of the world community. Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country in Central Asia, the area is 198 500 square km. According to July 2005 estimates, the population was 5,264,000 with the majority (76.1 percent) identified as Muslims. The mountainous region of the Tian Shan covers over 80% of the country, with the remainder made up of valleys and basins. Lake Issyk-Kul in the north-western Tian Shan is the largest lake in Kyrgyzstan and the second largest mountain lake in the world. The climate varies regionally. The south-western Fergana Valley is subtropical and extremely hot in summer, with temperatures reaching 40°C (104°F.) The northern foothills are temperate and the Tian Shan varies from dry continental to polar climate, depending on elevation. In the coldest areas temperatures are sub-zero for around 40 days in winter, and even some desert areas experience constant snowfall in this period. Kyrgyzstan has borders with the Republics of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and China, the full length of state border is 4 599 km.The form of government is a democratic republic. The executive branch includes a president and prime minister. The parliament is unicameral. The judicial branch comprises a Supreme Court, a Constitutional Court, local courts, and a Chief Prosecutor. War against terrorism (OEF)After the events on 11 Sep 2001, the Kyrgyz Republic actively support Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), as a result of this, the Kyrgyz Republic openly supported the Coalition Airbase at Manas Airport outside of our capital city of Bishkek (the airbase was opened in December 2001). Many countries such as France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea have joined the coalition efforts using Manas Airbase as a strategic base of operations. At the moment military contingents of USA, Spain and France are deployed on the base. The main purpose of the Manas AFB is transportation of cargoes to Afghanistan.Besides use of the Base the Kyrgyz Republic provides air traffic support and logistical support to Afghanistan. Together with the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan the Kyrgyz republic provided 20 thousands tons of humanitarian aid to Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (food, clothes, tents etc.).
