U.S. Central Command statement regarding the death of Linda Norgrove

MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (Dec. 2, 2010) — A US\UK military investigation into the circumstances of the 8 October 2010 death of Ms. Linda Norgrove is complete. Ms. Norgrove, a UK citizen and aid worker, was kidnapped 26 September by Taliban insurgents in Kunar province, Afghanistan.

A full, comprehensive and partnered investigation was conducted that included both US and UK investigating officers.

Initial results of the investigation have been briefed to members of the US and UK governments. It is believed that Ms. Norgrove died as a result of grenade wounds incurred during a US- led rescue operation. Out of respect for the UK’s legal procedures, US CENTCOM will not release additional information until Her Majesty’s Coroner inquest is complete, anticipated sometime in early 2011.

Although Ms. Norgrove’s death is a terrible tragedy, the insurgents who kidnapped her bear the ultimate responsibility for her death.

U.S. Central Command sincerely regrets the loss of life that resulted from this terrible incident, and we extend our deepest condolences to the Norgrove family for their tragic loss.

“Ms. Norgrove was a remarkably valiant young woman whose courage and compassion were well known to the Afghans she was there to help,” said General James N. Mattis, Commander U.S. Central Command. “Her dedication to humanitarian service--and the support of her family -- have been an inspiration to us all.”
