School opening celebrated in Shahidi Hassas

Press Release United States Forces-Afghanistan January 4, 2009                                                         Release Number 20090401-01 School opening celebrated in Shahidi Hassas KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army soldiers, Coalition forces and local Afghans celebrated the grand opening of a new school in Shahidi Hassas District, Oruzgun (Uruzgan) province, last Monday. The nine-classroom school opened its doors for the first time to 40 students eager to register for class.  ANSF and Coalition forces helped hand out school supplies to the new students that included 80 notebooks, 50 backpack kits (notepads, pencil sharpeners and rulers), 50 pens, 200 pencils, crayons, colored pencils, erasers with Afghan flag logos, soccer balls, hand-crank radios, Afghan flags and Afghan National Army posters. “The grand opening of this school symbolizes the many advances the Afghan people have made towards rebuilding Afghanistan’s education system,” said Col. Jerry O’Hara, a U.S. Forces Afghanistan spokesperson.  “This school will be a fixture of the local community for years to come.” -30-
