Afghan Commandos destroy insurgent drug lab in Helmand province

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 14, 2009                               Release Number 20091403-05 Afghan Commandos destroy insurgent drug lab in Helmand province KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan National Army Commandos from the 205th Corps, advised by Coalition forces, netted drugs and weapons early March 14, during a search of an enemy compound in the Nawa district, Helmand province. The Commandos discovered 20 pounds of black tar heroin in a drug lab, as well as an AK-47 rifle with magazines while searching the compounds of a known enemy of Afghanistan. The two-compound search occurred without incident. All women and children were cared for by female members of the Coalition forces who were on site to address their needs. Following the search, the Commandos spoke with villagers in the area. Villagers told Commandos that the Taliban had been coming around every day demanding money, food and water. The Commandos vowed to put an end to the Taliban activities in the region. -30- United States Forces Afghanistan's mission, in coordination with NATO's International Security Assistance Force, is to conduct operations to defeat terrorist networks and insurgents by developing effective governance and building the Afghan National Security Force.  Effective security throughout the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan facilitates continued regional stability and increases economic development for the people of Afghanistan.
