U.S. deploys more helicopters, logistics specialists for flood effort
By U.S. Embassy, Islamabad, Pakistan
ISLAMABA (Aug. 28, 2010) - The U.S. announced today the deployment of 18 additional helicopters to Pakistan as part of the expanding U.S. contribution to flood-relief efforts.  The 10 CH-47 Chinook and eight UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters will operate in partnership with the Pakistani military throughout flood-impacted areas beginning in mid-September.

Also, approximately 40 U.S. Air Force personnel arrived in Pakistan today to support Pakistan's flood relief operations. The group of logistics specialists will work in partnership with Pakistani officials at the PAF base Chaklala to support humanitarian airlift operations delivering relief supplies throughout Pakistan. This is the second time these personnel have deployed to Pakistan, they provided similar support during the 2005 earthquake relief operations.

These are the latest in a series of deployments in response to Pakistan's urgent request for flood-relief assistance.  Approximately 15 U.S. military helicopters and three C-130 aircraft are already supporting flood-relief efforts in Pakistan. The aircraft have transported more than 2 million pounds of humanitarian assistance supplies and rescued more than 7,000 people, delivering much-needed aid and providing transport to people who urgently need emergency assistance.

To date, U.S. military aircraft supporting flood-relief efforts in Pakistan have transported more than 1.8 million pounds of humanitarian assistance supplies and rescued more than 6,000 people within Pakistan, delivering much-needed aid and providing transport to people who urgently need emergency assistance.
