More helicopters arrive, over 10,000 Pakistanis rescued so far
By U.S. Embassy, Islamabad, Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (Sept. 1, 2010) – Two U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters were delivered to Pakistan today as the first elements of the U.S. Army 16th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) began to arrive from Ft. Wainwright, Alaska. The unit and its helicopters will operate in partnership with the Pakistani military throughout flood-impacted areas.

The helicopters were transported to Pakistan Air Force Base Chaklala via a U.S. Air Force C-17 cargo aircraft.  They will be reassembled, prepared for operations and await the arrival of other helicopters and support personnel, scheduled to arrive over the coming days.

This is the latest in a series of deployments in response to Pakistan's urgent request for flood-relief assistance.  In addition to the incoming 16th CAB helicopters, there are currently 15 U.S. military helicopters in Pakistan providing support with another four U.S. Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters scheduled to arrive later this week from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

To date, U.S. military aircraft supporting flood-relief efforts in Pakistan have transported more than 3 million pounds of humanitarian assistance supplies and rescued more than 10,000 people within Pakistan, delivering aid and providing transport to people who urgently need emergency assistance.
