U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W. Patterson

Message on the Occasion of Pakistan Independence Day

Aug. 14, 2010

On behalf of the United States, I send warm wishes and congratulations to Pakistan as you commemorate 63 years of independence.  We know that this year, your joy is tempered by sadness for the suffering and terrible losses that millions of Pakistanis are suffering because of the devastating floods.

Our countries have developed a broad and deep partnership based on shared values and interests – and Americans are stepping up to support the people of Pakistan as you come through this tragedy with determination and courage.

In the words of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan’s founder and first Governor-General, the story of Pakistan “is the very story of great human ideals, struggling to survive in the face of great odds and difficulties.”  But we know that you are resilient people and, when faced with difficulties, you are people who build—much as you built this nation.

On this occasion, Americans join with the people of Pakistan as you prepare for a promising future.

Sincerely,

Anne W. Patterson

United States Ambassador to Pakistan
