Norwegian Forces Deployed

Norway has about 650 troops participating in different operations around the world:

  • Africa: UNMIS and MINURCAT
  • The Balkans: UNMIK, KFOR and NATO Bosnia
  • Afghanistan: ISAF and UNAMA
Support to International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)

Norway’s main support to the Global War on Terror is the overall contribution to the NATO operation in Afghanistan. This contribution consists of the following military elements:

  • Lead nation for PRT Meymaneh in Faryab province including an Aeromedical Detachment with 3 helicopters.
  • Corps and Brigade mentors in 209th Corps in Mazar-e Sharif
  • Kandak OMLT (1Kandak /1 Bde/209th Corps) from January 2009
  • SOF Task Force in RC Capital
  • Staff officers in HQ ISAF and HQ RC North
  • National Support Element in Mazar-e Sharif and Kabul. National Contingent Command in Mazar-e Sharif.

As of present, Norway has a substantial contribution in the ISAF mission, and do not foresee any increase in number of troops in the near future, although there might be a shift of types and capabilities.

Norway contributed with one submarine in Operation Active Endeavour until spring 2008. No participation is planned for in 2009.

 Norwegian Humanitarian Assistance

Norway will in 2009 give about 750 Mill NOK (USD 100 Mill) per year. 150 Mill NOK (USD 20 Mill) will be directed directly to Faryab.
