FORT McPHERSON, Ga. (Sept. 23, 2009) — A military training exercise in Egypt next month involving a dozen countries is designed to build stronger bonds between the military forces of those nations as part of an ongoing series of exercises begun nearly 30 years ago.

Operation Bright Star is spearheaded by Egypt and the U.S. Central Command and Third Army/US Army Central.  The coalition of military forces participating in the exercise also includes France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

“Third Army’s participation in Bright Star has been and will continue to be a keystone event in our common coalition training program,” said COL Stephen M. Twitty, Third Army chief of staff. “We expect to build upon past successes and continue to have a positive effect on the future of international and regional military cooperation.”

The biennial training exercise will take place in Cairo and Alexandria from Oct. 10-26, and will comprise airborne, aviation, and naval and Marine field training exercises, along with a multinational command post battle-tracking exercise.  A press conference on Oct. 7 is scheduled to provide more details about the exercise.

Bright Star is the oldest exercise in the United States Central Command’s area of operations.  It is a biennial, joint/coalition exercise designed to increase regional involvement in pursuit of improved security and defense capabilities.  Since its inauguration in 1981, as a result of the Camp David Peace Accords, it has grown to a multinational event observed by many nations from around the world.  It is the centerpiece in the military-to-military relations between the United States and Egypt.  Highlights of this year’s exercise will include a multinational paratrooper jump involving 600 Soldiers and a ship-to-shore operation with over a thousand Marines storming the beach.

Operation Bright Star is relevant to today’s fast-paced battlefield environment by focusing on the training of coalition forces in the use of high-tech computer systems to track the battle and increase situational awareness.
