Support to the Global War on Terror
The Armenian Government is fully committed to the war on terror. One of the main objectives of national foreign policy is support of international peace and stability, as well as an input to the international efforts of fight against terrorism. Participating in international conventions against terrorism, Armenia thoroughly implements their provisions. Armenia provides political and operational support to the international anti-terrorist coalition, and condemns terrorism in all its forms. In 2004 Armenia joined the following anti-terrorist conventions:- Convention on the Prohibition and prevention of terrorism,- International Convention on Suppression of terrorist bombing,- International Convention for the financing of terrorism. The Government of the Republic of Armenia adopted a number of legislative acts in support of implementing it’s obligations in this area.Support to OIF
In August 2004 Armenia assigned a National Liaison Officer to the US Central Command to coordinate Mil-to-Mil anti-terrorist cooperation between the US CENTCOM, Coalition Partners and Armenian Ministry of Defense. In order to regulate command, logistic and other issues concerning Force deployment in Iraq, the Ministry of Defense of Armenia joined to the MOU on MND C-S command and related matters, as well as ACS agreement with the United States in 2004. Since January 2005 Armenian Armed Forces contingents participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom within Multi-National Division Center-South with total number of 322 servicemen.The current Armenian contingent, deployed in Ad-Divaniyah, Iraq consists of:
- Staff elements in MNF-I, MNC-I and MND C-S Headquarters,
- Transportation platoon,
- Medical team,
- De-mining team.
The main tasks of Armenian contingent are the following:
- To provide logistic support to the MND C-S units as well as the transportation of MND C-S personnel and humanitarian cargos,
- To conduct de-mining and EOD destruction operations ,
- To provide medical support to the MND C-S troops and civilian,
- To conduct base security operations.
Support to OEF
During the Operation Enduring Freedom, the Armenian Government authorized the US Military aircrafts to use Armenian airspace. Currently, the Armenian MOD is considering the possibilities of deployment of staff elements and a medical team for supporting the OEF.Other peacekeeping missions
In February 2004 Armenia deployed a peacekeeping light infantry platoon in Kosovo. Currently the 7th platoon is deployed in the AOR of the Multinational Task Force – East within the Greek Battalion. The necessary procedures for enlargement of the peacekeeping platoon to a company level are undergoing. Cooperation within regional, European and Euro Atlantic frameworks in the War on terrorism Armenia joined a number of anti-terrorist conventions and agreements within framework of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Building on existing cooperation with the NATO in this area, Armenia is ready for more active involvement in implementation of relevant anti-terrorist activities in particular the Partnership Action Plan against Terrorism and exchange of intelligence information.Further Plans
Armenia is determined to strengthen its capabilities to combat terrorism and intends to enhance it’s capabilities to manage the consequences caused by terrorist acts. According to the NATO-Armenia Partnership Action Plan, Armenia plans to enhance existing Peacekeeping Battalion up to the Brigade level until 2015.Links
