ISLAMABAD (Sept. 2, 2010) — Four U.S. Marine Corps CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters arrived at Pano Aqil Air Base today near Sukkur, Pakistan, to prepare for relief operations in the flood-stricken area.

The aircraft are the first four of what will eventually be 8 U.S. military helicopters at the southern air base to support flood relief operations there in partnership with the Pakistan military.  Two of the helicopters arrived from Ghazi Air Base in the north, while two arrived from USS Peleliu off the southern coast of Karachi.  Additional helicopters will provide support from USS Peleliu.

Helicopter operations from the new location are in support of a request from the Government of Pakistan to assist relief efforts in the southern areas.

Over the coming days, the 18 U.S. Army helicopters from Alaska arriving this week at Pakistan Air Force Base Chaklala, Rawalpindi, will eventually move to Ghazi Air Base. They will replace the 15 U.S. military helicopters currently there, most of which will move to Pano Aqil Air Base.

To date, U.S. military aircraft supporting flood-relief efforts in Pakistan have transported more than 3 million pounds of humanitarian assistance supplies and rescued more than 11,000 people within Pakistan, delivering aid and providing transport to people who urgently need emergency assistance.
