Tragic Deaths of U.S. Service Members in Afghanistan Won't Stop Evacuation Mission

A dozen American service members were killed, 15 more were injured and a number of Afghan civilians were also killed or injured during attacks this morning in Afghanistan.

NAVCENT Begins IMX 22 Main Planning Conference

U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) opened the main planning conference for International Maritime Exercise (IMX) 22 in Manama, Bahrain, Aug. 16. During the conference, virtual participants and 100 in-person attendees from 21 nations are meeting to collaborate and plan exercise details. Planners will develop training scenarios, determine what assets will be needed and identify additional considerations for the exercise’s final planning conference later this year.

First Visit by U.S. Warship to Egypt’s Berenice Naval Base

Guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61) visited Egypt’s Berenice Naval Base, Aug. 12, marking the first time a U.S. warship has pulled into the Red Sea base, which officially opened in January 2020. During the visit the ship hosted Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT), U.S. 5th Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces (CMF); Vice Adm. Ahmed Khaled Hassan Saeed, commander of the Egyptian Naval Force; U.S. Ambassador to Egypt, Jonathan R. Cohen; and Commodore Waleed Aly Atiaa, commanding officer of Berenice Naval Base.

KC-10 flexes to move mission forward

Task Force Phoenix in the fight against RCIEDs

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were a deadly threat during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, causing the majority of casualties in both conflicts. IEDs remain a threat today for coalition forces in Iraq and Syria during Operation Inherent Resolve. The U.S. military developed several countermeasures to protect both mounted and dismounted service members from this threat.

NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Bahrain Supports Four Consecutive Aqaba Port Visits

Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Bahrain provided contracting and logistics support to four scheduled port visits in Aqaba, Jordan during the last three months. After more than a year of restricted travel due to COVID-19 mitigations, logistics support representatives of NAVSUP FLC Bahrain traveled to Aqaba to provide boots-on-the-ground support to USS Mahan (DDG 72), USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) and USS San Antonio (LPD 17) while they operated in U.S. 5th Fleet.
